Between the Alentejo coast and the far southwestern tip of the Algarve lies one of the most beautiful and least developed coastlines in Europe. Much of it is protected within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, and through it runs the Fishermen’s Trail, part of the Rota Vicentina walking network. For travellers who love nature, silence and the sea, walking this path is one of the great quiet luxuries of Portugal.

A Path Made by Fishermen

The trail follows the narrow paths once used by local fishermen to reach the coves and rocky platforms where they cast their lines. It hugs the clifftops for much of its length, winding through dunes, scrubland and fields of wildflowers, and dropping down to secluded beaches. The full route runs for roughly two hundred and twenty kilometres from São Torpes, near Sines, to Odeceixe and on to Cabo de São Vicente, divided into stages of around fifteen to twenty kilometres.

What You Will See

The landscape changes constantly. Dark schist cliffs give way to golden sandstone, sea stacks rise from the surf and white storks nest on the rocks above the ocean, a rare sight found on very few coastlines in the world. In spring the paths are lined with rockrose, lavender and wild orchids. Small villages such as Vila Nova de Milfontes, Almograve, Zambujeira do Mar and Odeceixe offer whitewashed streets, fresh seafood and a gentle pace of life.

The Most Beautiful Stages

You do not need to walk the whole trail to appreciate it. The stretch between Vila Nova de Milfontes and Almograve is wonderfully varied, while the section from Almograve to Zambujeira do Mar passes the fishing harbour of Entrada da Barca and spectacular cliffs. Further south, the walk to Odeceixe ends at a beach where the river meets the sea, one of the prettiest spots on the coast. Note that some stages cross soft sand, which is slower and more demanding than it looks.

Walking in Comfort

A luxurious way to walk the trail is with a self-guided itinerary that includes luggage transfers between carefully chosen guesthouses, country houses and small boutique hotels. You walk with only a light daypack, arriving each afternoon to a hot shower, a garden and a good dinner. Many travellers choose to base themselves in one or two lovely properties and walk individual stages, using local taxis to return. Private guides can add depth, sharing knowledge of plants, birds and local history.

Food Along the Way

Walking builds an appetite, and the southwest coast satisfies it generously. Expect grilled fish caught that morning, octopus, clams, goose barnacles gathered from the rocks and hearty Alentejo dishes inland. The region is also known for its sweet potatoes from Aljezur, honey and medronho, a strong spirit distilled from the fruit of the strawberry tree. A long lunch on a terrace overlooking the sea is the perfect reward after a morning on the cliffs.

When to Go

Spring, from March to early June, is the finest season, with wildflowers in bloom and mild temperatures. Autumn is also excellent, with warm seas and quieter paths. Summer can be hot and exposed, as there is little shade along the cliffs, while winter brings dramatic skies and occasional rain. Whatever the season, carry water, sun protection and good walking shoes, and keep a safe distance from the cliff edges. The reward is a coastline that feels truly wild, and a sense of space that is increasingly rare in Europe.
